Moles on his resignation

Now former New Zealand coach Andy Moles has spoken out on the reasons behind his recent departure from the role:

"There was a group of players who had lost confidence in my ability as a coach," said Moles. This left me really in an untenable position after that had been so widely reported in the media the day before.

"Over the 11 months that I've been around I had no inkling, no communication that there were problems until we got back after the Champions Trophy.

"Let me be very clear, it is the players' team, they are the most important thing."

It is the last sentence that strikes more than anything, and fits in with some of the recent comments from Michael Vaughan that I posted about here.

Credit to Moles as it does seem he has been stabbed in the back by his players, yet his admission that he hadn't been good enough (or at least handled the side in the way he should) was a frank and honest one.

It perhaps does show the increasing power that players are demanding in the international game, and that captains are wanting a greater responsibility in the running of the set up, with the coach becoming more a facilitator for this and working with the captain and senior players as opposed to having the absolute control that they were afforded previously.

vote it up! BallHype: hype it up!
